Passage

Oceanic islands offer the naturalist a kind of experiment that no laboratory could easily arrange. They rise at a distance from continents, surrounded by water that prevents many animals from crossing, yet they are not empty. Birds may arrive by flight, seeds may be carried by wind or currents, and insects may survive a journey on floating wood or in the soil held among roots. The island community is therefore both connected and separate: connected because life has reached it from elsewhere, separate because only certain kinds of life can make the passage.

Wallace argues that this selective arrival explains why island life often appears unusual. A small island may have numerous birds and plants but few native mammals, not because mammals are less successful in ordinary landscapes, but because the sea forms a barrier that most of them cannot pass. Reptiles, insects, and plants may be represented in very different proportions from those found on the nearest mainland. The question is not simply which continent lies closest, but which organisms possess a means of crossing the distance and surviving after arrival.
