Passage

Powell’s account of the Colorado country treats a canyon not as a mere spectacle but as a record of work. The vertical walls impress the traveler first, because they rise like architecture and seem too abrupt to have been made by ordinary water. Yet Powell’s method is to turn amazement into evidence. A river, he suggests, should be read through the marks it leaves: the slope of its channel, the arrangement of fallen rock, the side streams that enter from narrower gorges, and the successive ledges exposed on either wall.

The most important idea is persistence. A flood may appear powerful because it is loud and dangerous, but the larger labor of erosion is usually slow. Sand carried in the current becomes a cutting tool. Pebbles strike the riverbed, loosen other fragments, and move them downstream. Rain and frost weaken the cliffs above, so that gravity can deliver new material to the water below. The canyon is therefore not the product of one violent moment. It is the visible remainder of repeated actions, each small enough to escape notice, but together sufficient to alter a continent. Because each force leaves a different trace, the landscape becomes a kind of archive: talus slopes point to falling rock, polished channels point to moving sediment, and terraces point to former levels of the river. Together, these clues make slow change visible.

This way of seeing also changes the scale of time. Human observers measure a journey by days, camps, and meals; geology measures change by layers and depths. Powell often moves between these scales. The boat crew must solve immediate problems: a rapid, a broken oar, a place to sleep. At the same time, the cliffs around them display a much older sequence, in which seas advanced, sediments hardened, land rose, and rivers adjusted their courses. The reader is asked to hold both perspectives at once.

For TOEFL readers, the passage is useful because its argument depends on inference rather than direct statement. Powell cannot watch a canyon being made from beginning to end. Instead, he gathers signs that point backward from present form to past process. The lesson is broader than geology. When a result appears sudden or mysterious, careful explanation often begins by identifying the repeated forces that could have produced it. Observation becomes scientific when it connects visible details to an unseen history.
