Passage
Few animals appear less important at first sight than the earthworm. It has no beauty that attracts the eye, no strength that seems useful to human labor, and no sudden motion by which it can command attention. Yet Darwin argues that the quiet work of worms has changed the surface of the land more steadily than many forces that look more impressive. Their power lies not in violence but in repetition. A single worm carries only a small amount of fine earth to the surface; millions of worms, working through many seasons, can cover stones, bury old pavements, and prepare the soil in which plants take root.
The process begins with feeding. Worms swallow earth together with decaying leaves and other vegetable matter. Inside their bodies, the material is broken down and mixed. The castings that they leave at the mouth of their burrows are therefore not useless dirt but soil that has been sifted, enriched, and moved upward. Rain then spreads these castings over the ground. In this way, the upper layer of mould is continually renewed, while objects that once rested on the surface slowly sink from view.
Their burrows also change the condition of the ground. Channels made by worms allow air and water to enter soil that would otherwise become compact. Leaves pulled underground decay out of sight and add organic material close to plant roots. The animal that seems merely to disturb a garden path is therefore helping to make the earth more open, mixed, and fertile.
This gradual burial explains a fact that might otherwise seem puzzling. Old fields sometimes hide coins, tiles, or fragments of buildings beneath a layer of earth, although no human hand has intentionally covered them. The explanation is not that the objects actively descend, but that the soil rises around and above them. Worms bring up fine particles from below; weather distributes the particles; vegetation holds the new layer in place. What appears to be still ground is, in fact, a surface under slow construction.
Darwin’s point is also methodological. He asks readers to notice a small cause and then to enlarge their view of time. An effect too slight to impress us in a day may become decisive when multiplied by centuries. The earthworm therefore becomes evidence for a broader scientific habit: nature often works through ordinary agents whose importance can be measured only by patient observation.
