Passage

When a river is viewed only during the quiet weeks of summer, it may appear to be a permanent line drawn through a valley, rather than an instrument of alteration. Yet the same stream, swollen by rain or melting snow, becomes powerful enough to tear soil from its banks, roll stones along its bed, and carry fine mud far beyond the place where it was first loosened. Lyell urged his readers to attend to these ordinary operations, because they show that the surface of the earth is not fixed, but constantly being renewed by causes still in action. Such attention also disciplines the imagination: instead of inventing distant forces first, the observer begins with changes that can be measured, compared, and revisited.

The evidence is clearest where a river enters a lake or the sea. There the current loses part of its force, and the sediment that had been suspended in the water begins to settle. Year after year, thin layers accumulate, enclosing shells, leaves, or the remains of animals that lived near the shore.
