Passage

When an old field is left uncultivated, it may seem at first to be merely abandoned ground. The fences lean, grasses cover the furrows, and the marks of human labor gradually disappear. Yet Thoreau asks readers to notice that such a place is not empty. It is already receiving seeds from the woods around it, and every season adds a new layer of evidence. The return of trees is not sudden, but it is also not accidental.

One important clue lies in the relation between parent trees and young growth. If pines stand near the edge of a field, small pines often appear after a few years; if oaks are abundant nearby, young oaks may follow.
